27 Things for My 27th Year!

Another birthday, and a new kind of list!

Inspired by my good friend, Ashley, I decided that I would do 27 things that I’ve been either too scared, too busy, too lazy, or too forgetful to do before I turn 28! I am very grateful that Ashley will b accompanying me on some of these adventures!

I feel that the effort I put into thinking of things to do is a testament to the fact that I’ve been privileged to do so many amazing, wonderful, and new things these last few years. I’m very “Go big, or Go Home,” so I had fun getting ideas and coming up with my own to make my 27th year on this earth more than memorable!

So, here we go:

27 Things for My 27th Year

  1. Sunrise hike at Cowles Mountain with Ashley!*
  2. Go Skydiving (I am TERRIFIED of heights)!
  3. Create a modeling portfolio (for Natural Models LA and True Models Management submission)
  4. Go to Stagecoach to see Tim McGraw and Miranda Lambert (wear shorts and fringe tops!) OR go see Mariah Carey (aka, The Chanteuse) in Las Vegas!!!
  5. Sunset/Sunrise or Beach Yoga Class
  6. Have a date with myself: Massage, Facial, Shopping, and Dinner…just me!
  7. Take a class at The Cheese Store of San Diego
  8. Have brunch at the Hotel Del Coronado
  9. Volunteer with Urban Angels Soup Kitchen*
  10. Take a spin class
  11. Host a dinner party
  12. Gondola ride in Venice, Italy
  13. Ride a bike (I haven’t since I broke my wrist on one in 10th grade)
  14. Visit the Museum of Tolerance (and Kelly H.) in the City of Angels!
  15. Take a surfing lesson*
  16. “Free Hugs” at Balboa Park*
  17. Thursday Night Throwdown (Line Dance Lessons) at  Moonshine Flats/Incahoots (I WILL learn to line dance)!*
  18. Write a letter to my 35 year old self
  19. Hot Chocolate 15K
  20. Picnic at a National Park (finally use that dang picnic basket I bought in 2010).*
  21. Get the SeeSondraSlim Facebook page to 500 likes!
  22. Learn to play a song on the guitar
  23. Buy Starbucks for strangers
  24. Surprise 5 people when they least expect it (Document on FB/Blog/Instagram)
  25. Book my next International expedition
  26. Be published in a magazine/publication
  27. Bingo Night at a casino

This will surely be a fun journey, and I cannot wait to document it all here on SeeSondraSlim!

Besides What You See….

Ok, confession: I love musicals.

Like, obsessively, ridiculously love musicals.

Like, when I drive home at 5 am in the morning from my night shifts, I’ll turn off the radio and sing songs from Funny Girl or The Sound of Music, or Frozen to keep me entertained and awake.

My mom introduced me to The Sound of Music when I was about 5 years old, and it’s still one of my very favorite stories and musicals of all time!

This post was inspired by the song Maria sings:

“Strength doesn’t lie in numbers
Strength doesn’t lie in wealth
Strength lies in nights of peaceful slumbers

It tells me all I trust I lead my heart to
All I trust becomes my own
I have confidence in confidence alone

I have always loved those lines, but as I learned to love myself over the years, it dawned on me how this little musical affirmation makes such a difference for me!

People remark on my confidence pretty frequently, and it always surprises me. In my ideal world, we would all be confident and ambitious people, who wake up ready to kick ass, and take names! “Can’t,” “won’t,” “shouldn’t” and other hesitant words would be abolished from our vocabularies, and we’d put our big girl (or boy) panties on and MAKE. THINGS. HAPPEN.

But, alas, we are only human. we aren’t sure if we can pull off a certain look, quit a job to chase our dreams, or maybe even make rent next month. The list goes on, and on!

I really value the fact that people see me as a strong, and confident person. I am those things. But rest assured, I have bad days, financial problems, personal struggles, and insecurities too! I tend to be more vulnerable and candid with these things, because I think it’s very important for people to know that someone with a past like mine-filled with emotional abuse, physical abuse, homelessness, and other various struggles- is surviving merely because of a choice. Maybe even because I live in a world that assumes those things will break me, or make me weak.

I am a LOT of things…but weak is generally only used to describe me when cookies are involved (no shame).

I genuinely believe that confidence is something I put on every day. It’s that coat of mascara to make you look a little more awake, or that statement necklace you use to punch up a basic ensemble. It’s the finishing touch to make you feel a little more…complete. And if you do this everyday, soon, it becomes second nature, and you find yourself walking taller, smiling at more strangers, and smiling to yourself because you feel wonderful.

Because you feel like a powerful, wonderful YOU.

Life has issued me many challenges, and I face more and more of them everyday. But knowing that you have those beautiful, strong qualities inside you makes it a bit better. Take a minute each day to “put your confidence on,” and I promise you’ll see some really positive changes. I am at the point now where I feel confident just because I wear matching bra and panty sets (thank you, OCD!).

You deserve to be treated like the amazing person you are. But you have to lead by example, and show the world what you deserve. It starts with you! And if it’s a corny
“Sound of Music” verse (or a Lil’ Wayne freestyle, which also works wonders for me, as well), then SO BE IT!

Sometimes, you just have to fake it until you make it. And that is perfectly fine, if it helps you build that confidence in yourself. Own it, rock it, and SHOW THEM HOW AMAZING YOU ARE!

The “Get Fit” Lust List!

Ahh….2015 is here. I am really excited for everything it has in store!

This means every time I go to the gym, I’ll end up leaving without a workout (or my sanity), because either all of the parking or all of the equipment will be occupied. Thankfully, I recently got ClassPass, which allows me to go to many of the super adorable, super trendy fitness studios for a variety of concentrated workouts (my favorites so far are Yoga Sculpt at Yoga Six Point Loma, and Barre at PureBarre Hillcrest), on my time, in the area where I happen to be.

For a girl with two jobs, and a limited sleep schedule, this is an amazing option. I kept my 24 Hour Fitness membership as well, because I get a rebate through one of my jobs that pays for all but $4 of it!

I am currently training for the Mermaid 5K here in San Diego, as well as the Hot Chocolate 15K in March…so those treadmills come in handy for training!

As I get re-fired up for the New Year, I’ve gotten back into more “clean” eating, and I have so many awesome products I have found to aid in my fitness journey that I cannot wait to get my hands on-so I thought I’d share them with you! I get REALLY excited about fancy inventions (and a little angry that I didn’t think of them), and I try to evaluate how practical they are for myself, and my lifestyle. I have decided that these are “must haves,” and will gradually be adding them to my arsenal!

CrockPot Lunch Crock – $24.99

Ok, so at one of my offices, there is no microwave. This can cause issues when it comes to my ability to make good decisions at lunch time, I have no problem admitting it!

So, the beauty of this item is that you put your meal in, plus it in when you get to work, and voila! Hot food by lunch time! My kind of crockpot! It’s great for the soups I love to make, but I can also put roasted veggies and already prepared meats in here, and not risk them drying out or being undercooked, as well.
