Tuesday Tidbits!

So, I find myself with some time, and before I hit the farmers market, I thought I’d share some things I learned through all the research I’ve been doing on running and nutrition as of late. A LOT of my information is from the awesome site I shared with you last week, Greatist.com.

Simple Swaps:

  • Planks instead of crunches. Planks work your whole core. Say it with me: “Abs before summer!”
  • Warming up, rather than going right to the workout. I am horrible when it comes to this! I just hop on, and get started. But no. Doing an active warmup will loosen your limbs, and your body benefits more from the workout, overall.
  • Foam roller for static stretching. Now, this…I haven’t tried yet. But I did watch Alex use one in the living room, and judging from the grunts? I think she liked it. I think….lol.

  • Whole fruit for fruit juice. I loves me some Simply Orange…but it’s super expensive, and not quite as fresh and we like to think. Eating the actual orange gives you all of it’s healthy perks: fiber, vitamins, etc.
  • Red wine or beer for a margarita. Margarita=SUGAR city! But they’re so pretty and yummy…..ahh!
  • Local produce for supermarket veggies. According to the USDA, locally seasonal fruits may be more nutritous!
  • Doggy bag for over-eating. Ask for half of your meal to go before it even comes to the table. Less temptation, and if you’re like me, you won’t mindlessly eat while you talk, even AFTER you’re full.
  • Raw nuts for nut butter. Nut butters sneak in extra fat and sugar, while raw nuts are loaded with antioxidants!

  • Journaling for emotional eating. I have to keep a book on my nightstand, because a million thoughts run through my head at night and then all I want is a frozen strawberry fruit bar. I call it my gratitude book. I write down something I am grateful for at least once a day…which brings us to….
  • Gratitude for complaining. When I concentrate on every amazing thing in my life, it helps me decompress when it comes to the stressful and more irritating ones. I encounter ridiculous people and situations, and I just “Woo-Sah!,” and remind myself that I am 100 lbs lighter and will be in Sports Illustrated. Easy money.
  • Moderation for deprivation. EAT THE CAKE! You know, the really small piece.

Check out more swaps that can change your habits for the better here.

Also, I went all crazy and decided running is my calling, and then wouldn’t you know? Greatist posted a brand new infographic: The Ultimate Runner’s Guide.

Soooo much amazing information! From what you should wear, to what body types are typically suited to what type of running…there is something new to learn for even the more advanced runners here. I was psyched to find it, and I am even more psyched to put it to work tonight!

Now? I am off to Sprout’s to pick up some more fresh fruit for my protein smoothies I have been making.

Strawberries, blackberries, blueberries, a kiwi, and some pineapple! I added a scoop of protein before blending in my magic bullet.

And YUM!!!!

Maybe I’ll even make it to the farmer’s market in Escondido tonight! Local is better, after all!

Weekend Recap, and the Dreams of a (soon-to-hopefully-be) Runner.

I am having one of those days where I feel an insane urge to workout.

I lazily lounged around with my boyfriend this morning after being up until about 1 am, and I thought maybe I would go for a run this afternoon. Then of course, it started pouring. It is REALLY hard to remember I live in San Diego, California when it rains 3 days a week!

*Side Note: I was up so late because we had an AMAZING day! Sean took me toย the coolest place called “Crazy Bowls and Wraps,” that is a really healthy alternative to fast food. I had a pesto chicken wrap with jasmine rice and baby spinach. It was all wrapped up in a sun-dried tomato wrap, and served with house-made baked tortilla chips! There was a little bar with a yummy hummus, pico de gallo, a zesty jalapeno-cilantro sauce, and more! It was healthy, affordable, and delicious! Then, we went and met up with Josh and Alex and watched The Hunger Games in D-box seats that actually move during all the action sequences! AWESOME! From there, the boys dropped Alex and I off at the Lady Antebellum concert, and Alex and I walked in to find that our seats were fabulous! We jammed with Darius Rucker, who did some Hootie and the Blowfish tunes, too….and then it was Lady A time! They sang my favorites, and it was an awesome night!*

Anyways, back to the running! I have this itch, and I also have a luscious head of hair. And I cannot…or should I say, I will not, run in the rain and ruin it. So then, I figured I would go to the gym, but I feel like I shouldn’t be driving in this weather. Problem is, I had this brilliant idea and no comparable substitutions here at home. So I plan to complete this post, and then take my luscious-headed self out to my car, and head to 24 Hr Fitness.

....what they said!

Tomorrow, I start my 4 day Detox. My detox is a little different than some of the more extreme ones I’ve tried in the past, but it is what I consider to be my best shot and breaking into that 100’s zone on the scale. Quite frankly, if I step on there one more time and see it hit at EXACTLY 200 lbs? I’ll go ham sandwich crazy!

And those of you who know the background behind that phrase? You know that it’s no bueno!

Here’s how my 4 Day Detox is set up:

1. Swap meat for fish or nuts. I will probably opt not to eat meat altogether, for the sake of simplicity. But I do have some individually sized cans of tuna on hand just in case.

2. All fruits and veggies, all the time. I will supplement with protein powder and real-fruit protein smoothies. Hummus, peanut butter, balsamic vinegar, olive oil, roasted veggies….all ok. But no meat, rice, potatoes…..etc.

Did you know? Fresh pineapple contains bromelain, which aids in digestion. Grapes are excellent for cleansing the liver and kidneys. Tomatoes, carrots, and apples are rich in Vitamin C and E, which help fight free radicals.

3. I will drink at least 80 oz of water per day, and I am also going to try to drink herbal tea more regularly as well.

Did you know? Dandelion tea is said to be excellent for detoxification.

4. In addition, I plan to use this detox as the kick-off for reaching one of my biggest fears/post-op goals:

I am going to try to be a runner.

Running is an excellent total-body workout, and after the way life has been flying by lately, I think I can really benefit from it’s stress-relieving benefits, too!

I have always admired people who run for sport and hobby, rather than because it’s for a grade or to punish themselves. I would really like to be one of those people. And after losing over 100 pounds, I think it’s time to give myself some credit, stop being so afraid, and go after it!

I know I can do it. And I know it won’t necessarily be easy to find my stride. But hey, anything worth having is worth working for, as they say!

And so, I am going to go to the gym, and I am going to pass my beloved elliptical and stationary bike….and hit the treadmill. I plan to do some interval training. 2 minutes walking, 1 minute running. And eventually, I hope to walk for one minute, and run for two. From there, I think I will get it together. And then I can enjoy the scenery around me and run in the great outdoors (provided there is no rain, of course ๐Ÿ™‚ )

It can be really hard to face your fears. I am scared of running, because I am scared of failing. I am scared of being below average, and I am scared that I might be inadequate.

But you know what? I was scared of dying young due to Obesity, too. And you see that I’m trying to kick that problem where the sun doesn’t shine.

So, wish me luck!

If you don’t hear from me, please make a trip the 24 Hour Fitness in Vista, and see if they left my body in the locker room. Lol.

Here’s wishing everyone a sane and productive work week! I, for one, am unbearably excited to head to Anaheim with Sean this weekend. He hasn’t been to Disneyland since he was a kid, and I am stoked that he got a pass so he can go with me now. We are starting with his favorite, Indiana Jones! This is gonna be good times!

I just have to get through this detox first! WOOT WOOT!

I think I can, I think I can….

30 Day Challenge Part SEVEN!

Well, it’s been quite awhile, hasn’t it?

Truth be told, I have been so wrapped up in my regular life, I haven’t been motivated to come home, sit down, and get to blogging work!

But, I promise not to keep falling off the face of the earth. Honestly, this blog is the one thing that has kept me sane and ridiculously optimistic through all of the crazy changes since surgery. It really is imperative that I take that small chunk of time for myself to share my story. So, I apologize for the delay, if you were waiting. And I am back!

Wouldn’t you know? It’s 30 Day Challenge Time (it was, like 2 weeks ago!).

And heeeeeere we go! (I apologize in advance for looking like an utter ragamuffin. But I worked all day AND came home and made cornbread muffins and chili. Cut a girl some slack!).

Front View!

Bonus points to me for having super stick-out collarbones, no?

In other news, my birthday went off without a hitch! Wore a tiara at work, Sean took me to lunch and spoiled me with presents…went out that weekend with my friends and got a table in the V.I.P. section and we had a blast.

The Ladies! ๐Ÿ™‚

This next one is blurry…but it’s the only photo I have that shows my dress. An all-sequin Jessica Simpson dress that I’ve only been able to wear twice. It was already too big at this point, but I didn’t care. All hail the sequins! Lol.

BFF's since sixth grade!

The weekend after that, Sean took me on a surprise weekend getaway, and managed to keep the whole itinerary a secret. We ended up at one of the swankiest hotels ever, and went to Universal Studios; the one theme park I never made it to!

The view from the terrace in our swanky lanai room! ๐Ÿ™‚

One of the best surprises...EVER!

Best boyfriend...EVER.

THEN! St. Patty’s Day weekend, a great friend came to visit, and Alex, Josh and I took her to The Shout House in the gaslamp. It’s a deuling piano bar, and it is a BLAST! Alex and Josh requested an inappropriate song and a birthday shout-out to me, which resulted in me being called on-stage once again, but this time, instead of getting to sing, I was summoned to sit on top of the piano and be serenaded….during the song, a waiter came out with a dildo in a gift box. Don’t ask….just know that I was mortified. Yet, I couldn’t stop laughing….

I'm light enough to be lifted onto a piano, now! YESS!

May I just point out that my outfit that night made me super happy? I got my nude/blush trench for 50% off at Forever 21. That’s what happens when you get down to a size Large, apparently. I’m not complaining! Although, for some reason, it seems like the plus-sized lines all got significantly cuter once I could no longer fit into them! Conspiracy? Possibly!

Too freakin' cute! Target skinnies, Report wedges, Forever 21 top and trench, and necklace and all my accessories were Forever 21, too!

Overall, it’s been a good month so far! Health-wise, I am doing well. Had my physical and my Vitamin B-12 and D levels were low, so now I have to get a series of Vitamin B-12 injections, and I have to take 50,000 units of Vitamin D twice a week. This has prompted me to look into options outside of just my daily multi-vitamin and calcium+D supplements I have been taking regularly since surgery. It’s made me re-think my nutrition in general. I am in utter LOVE with a site called Greatist.com, and I receive the daily email newsletter that has tons of motivation and information. My current fave:

The Complete Guide to Workout Nutrition

Check it, and the whole site, out! It never hurts to have information at your disposal. Who knows what you may learn? It could be just the thing you need to get back on track….or to just get started!

I think I am done here! I still have two weekdays to get through, and then a movie date with my love this weekend!

Not to mention, Alex and I are going to see Lady Antebellum and Darius Rucker in concert Saturday night. SO. STOKED. I love them both. Thompson Square will be opening…but I don’t really care about them.

And so, I shall leave you with my favorite on-the-way-to-work song!

Love you all! Make the rest of the week count!
